Call right from the conversation

Call someone from a direct conversation, or call a whole group — up to six people. Voice travels directly between devices, encrypted, and is never recorded.

One-to-one

  • A phone button in the direct conversation header — once the other person has joined.
  • Incoming: a bar "Calling you" with "Decline" and "Answer"; a system notification if the window is in the background.
  • In a call: timer, speaking indicator, microphone, "End".
  • The result stays for 3 seconds: no answer (45 s), declined, busy, connection lost, answered on another device, call ended.

Group call

  • "Call group" in the group crumb menu.
  • Up to 6 people including you; disabled in larger groups.
  • The bar shows the participants; the speaker's icon lights up.
  • One person leaving doesn't end the call for the rest.
  • A window opened mid-call shows the bar right away.

Modes

  • Auto — the microphone is open for the whole call.
  • Push-to-talk — your voice goes out only while you hold the key or the "Talk" button. Space by default; reassign it in "Push-to-talk key" (a combination or a single modifier; Option on macOS and Alt on Windows are not accepted).
  • Space in a text field types, it doesn't talk.
  • The key is listened to only in the NCraft window: when the window goes to the background, transmission stops. No global keyboard hooks.
  • Windows only: on an empty tab, in PDFs and on error pages the key doesn't talk — use the "Talk" button.

Audio

  • System voice processing (the OS removes echo and noise), Opus at 48 kHz.
  • The microphone is used only during a call.

Status, honestly

  • Calls are a new feature: they pass automated tests but haven't yet been widely tested live.
  • A direct path or the group's relay is required: our servers never carry calls.

This page is a place to talk. Open it in NCraft: notes, tasks and chat about it sit right next to it, in an NCraft group.
